Did your roof suffer hail damage as a result of a recent storm?
The storm has come and gone, but it left a trail of damage behind. Has there been any recent hail storm in your area? As a property owner in Indianapolis, Indiana, do you suspect that something might have happened to your roof?
Hail balls of ice can wreak havoc on your property. If your property was unfortunate enough to be caught in mother nature’s fury then you’ll need to know how to check your roof for hail damage.
Signs of Hail Damage
It is not always easy to detect hail damage. Hail damage can expose your home to potential water damage and limit your roof’s lifespan. It is in your best interest to identify hail damage as soon as possible. Waiting too long may extend the damage to your property. The following are a few steps you can take to check if your roof has suffered hail damage.
“Please be careful if you plan on climbing your roof to check your shingles. Remember, you can always contact Faulkner Restoration for a no-hassle free inspection.”
1. Shingle Damage
Check the interior of individual shingles for damage as well as weakening around the edges. Specifically, you’ll want to check for missing granules that expose the substrate. The substrate should not look as if it has been exposed to the sun for a long period of time.

You should also run your hand over individual shingle to feel for indentations. Press your thumb against the dimple or indentation to check if there is damage. The bruising may be hidden, but if not detected it can cause the shingle to fail over time.
A hail storm can also cause circular cracking around a shingle. Call an expert if you find anything like a half-moon or full circle shape in your shingles. Circle shapes are a sign your roof has been hit by hail and is susceptible to water penetration.
2. Gutter Damage
Another area to check for hail damage are aluminum gutters and downspouts. Visually assess the condition of your home gutter: check the gutters for dents. If the hail hits the outer part of the gutter, there will be a dent facing the inside of the gutter. Otherwise, the dent will face outward.

If your gutters are full of granules, your shingles were likely damaged by hail and the rain washed the granules into your gutters.
3. Dings and Dents
You can often spot check your property for dings or dents from the ground. Any sign of dents around your chimney or roof vents could be a sign your roof has been hit by hail. What about your siding? Any dents, splatter marks or holes in your siding? Walk around your property to look for any obvious signs of hail damage.
4. Water Leaks
A severe hail storm can make your property susceptible to water leaks. Start at the second floor and work your way down while checking for the following:
- Water stains on ceilings or walls.
- Water stains in or around light fixtures.
- New mold or mildew on walls or ceiling.
- Attic Moisture or Wet Insulation.
5. Property Debris
Another great way to check for hail damage is to spot check exterior property like your fence, cars, and outdoor appliances. You’ll want to look for fresh scrapes on wood fencing or cracks in vinyl fencing.
